Who are the Capuchin Franciscan Friars?

The Capuchin Franciscan friars are a community of religious men who live and work in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. Capuchins dedicate their lives to caring for the poor, the sick, the elderly, the homeless, the forgotten and those in conflict. While their work vitally impacts our community, their humble life-style prefers little public recognition.

When the Capuchins arrived in Denver over 35 years ago, they were an unknown entity to most people; to many, they remain the same today. The friars prefer to keep low profiles, both in their ministries and in their fraternal lives. They choose to remain free of personal material possessions. Their governing rules challenge them to live in fraternity with three or more brothers. In Denver, there are three friaries (residences): St. Francis of Assisi Friary in northwest Denver (also home to the Provincial Headquarters), Fraternidad San Antonio near Five Points and San Damiano Friary in downtown Denver.

Currently, the Capuchins in the Denver metropolitan area:
  •  serve the homeless in downtown Denver by providing staff at Samaritan House;
  •  provide for the inner city's hungry and needy especially at Annunciation and Sacred Heart parishes near Five-Points;
  • offer spiritual support and counseling to prisoners in northern Colorado’s correctional institutions;
  • offer spiritual assistance to Secular Franciscan men and women across Mid-America;
  • serve as advocates for youth in gang infested areas of the inner city;
  • teach at Annunciation School, an inner city school located near Five Points;
  • shepherd parishioners and provide associates to several churches in the Denver metro area;
  • train seminarians at St. John Vianney Seminary as Formation Director;
  • help young men discover a life of service to the Church as priests and/or brothers;
  • offer daily Mass to the Capuchin Poor Clare Sisters and at Mother Cabrini Shrine;
  • are available for youth and parish Masses across the Rocky Mountain region;
  • provide spiritual direction/guidance for priests, brothers and sisters and lay men and women in the Mid-America region.
